Lakkrís in icelandic, in english – licorice , its either you love it or you hate it.
You will find this everywhere in iceland in all forms (in candies, chocolates, tea, cakes, sometimes even in ice cream…), and most probably overwhelmed by it everywhere you go, that actually makes you want to buy all of it!
but…hold your horses…
i would suggest to buy one packet and share it, the locals love it and will proudly share it with you, but most of the asians(including myself)…that i came across find the taste too overwhelming.
What is Lakkris?
“Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used in food and as medicine for thousands of years. Also known as “sweet root,” licorice root contains a compound that is about 50 times sweeter than sugar. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. It acts as a demulcent, a soothing, coating agent, and as an expectorant, meaning it helps get rid of phlegm. - Try the hotdogs that is unique in iceland, as the meat is made from lamb.Lamb in iceland is a staple food there and iceland have the best lamb meat in the world.Its a must try!!!

omNom chocolate,have the coolest packaging for chocolates!My favourite flavor is milk of madagascar – chocolate covered cereal crisp, its real goooooooooood that it melts in the mouth literally….Its like the maltese chocolate from iceland. A must try!
The local berry juice made with local ingredients!(available in keflavik airport icelandic food store)
At the first look, i thought it is an alcoholic drink but actually it is a non alcoholic and a very healthy drink.
Local berry juice with hand picked berries and herbs,it taste sweet and i regret buying the smallest bottle.It will really make a very refreshing drink on summer which is rich in vitamins and antioxidants.Only in iceland!!!
- lava cheese with chilli (available at the duty free store in keflavik airport)This is a real crunchy snack and a must try for cheese lovers! the description at the back of the box-“Inspired by the rocky fields of icelandic lava,lava cheese is made from local cheddar cheese that is dried and baked until it gets deliciously crunchy”.It is a spot on, a little bit spicy and will be a lovely snack to crunch on, while on the way to your next adventure in iceland.
